ABOUT THE DIRECTOR

HELEN BAUER, FOUNDER AND DIRECTOR OF FAMILIES MAKIN' MUSIC, holds certificates in voice from the Royal Conservatory of Music, Toronto ON, studied at the Dalcroze School (Eurythmics), Carnegie Mellon U, Pittsburgh, PA, and has participated in the Musician & Leadership program of MUSIC for PEOPLE, Litchfield, CT.

She has completed her Mastership Level One Certification in Early Childhood Music and Elementary General Music from the Gordon Institute for Music Learning Theory at Michigan State University, and Music In Early Childhood at the Toronto Royal Conservatory of Music. Furthering her studies, she has completed courses in "Music for the Unborn" and more on "Early Childhood Music & Movement" at Silver Lake College in Wisconsin.

In light of the fact that obesity in children is a major concern, and just as music and language should be taught from birth, so too, should healthy eating and exercise be similarily considered. Consequently, she has taken courses in Musical Yoga for children 3 - 5 yrs with parents through the Radiant Child Yoga and YogaKids programs.

Included in her training is Educational Kinesiology or Brain Gym, based on the work of Dr. Paul Dennison & Gail Dennison. Educational Kinesiology develops the brain's neural pathways the way nature does, - through movement. There are 26 easy and fun targeted moves that integrate body and mind bringing about rapid and often dramatic improvements in listening, physical coordination, concentration, memory, reading, writing, organizing and the list goes on. It is a very powerful tool that is beneficial to everyone from the very young to the elderly. And studies have shown that doing Brain Gym actvities improve children's performance and marks.

Musical theatre and TV/Radio singing have also been part of her repertoire, as has chorus singing in Canada, the U.S. (Lincoln Center), and abroad. She has presented on Dr. E. Gordon's music pedagogy for the Early Childhood Music & Movement Association in the U.S., and eagerly continues her professional development in order to give her students the absolute best in music learning.

WHAT OUR GRADS SAY. . .

"I've been taking my children to Helen's classes for the past 6 yrs and I can honestly tell you that it is the most fantastic music program that we've ever been to - and we've been to many! Helen teaches the children real musical concepts and the class is energetic and engaging. This is real music for parents that are looking for something far better than the average music class."

"All my nannies and I agree that your class is the best in the city."

"My mother is a music teacher, I am a doctor, my wife is a dentist and I would have to say we both think that you are the best music teacher we have come across. My little girl pretends she is you and we are her students all the time at home. We love your class!"

"Attention all JK-Grade One Teachers!" If you're looking for a great way to combine music, creative movement, parents and children, then look no further. Helen Bauer of "Families Makin' Music" has just what you need.  She shared her love of music with over 100 children and parents in our gymnasium and a great time was had by all. It was wonderful to see children enjoying music and creative movement with their parents... there was 100% involvement and after one hour, everyone went home smiling! We wanted something different, something to involve our parents, something fun and Helen delivered!"

"Though now living in Oakville, I saw the benefits of Helen's teaching method with my first child and was willing to come to her Toronto classes with my second child. I'm now expecting my third"

"I started my 5 week old baby in this program and was delighted at her reaction to the music and movement activities, both in class and at home."

"We learned so much from our music teacher, Helen. Not only do I feel more comfortable singing, but she has taught me how to play musically with my children."

" 'It's a Happening' is the only way I can describe these incredible weekend classes where my husband and I and the kids get to sing, dance, play and learn together."

"Play is the exultation of the possible".
