Parent Guidelines for Families Makin' Music

Do sing, dance, and have a good time in class. The biggest gift you can give your child(ren) is your enthusiastic participation.

Do call if you are going to miss a class. This will allow others to use your spot as a makeup time.

Do call or ask if you would like to make up a class. In order to avoid overcrowding, reservations for makeups are required. A maximum of two makeups per family per term is permitted.

Do invite grandparents and spouses to come to class. Only the aforementioned relatives are included in the cost of the program. All other relatives attending will be charged a $14 class fee. Please call to let me know of same.

Do call or ask about bringing unregistered siblings, child relatives, or child out-of town guests etc. to a class on a one-time or exceptional basis. Room permitting, each unregistered child will be charged a $14 class fee.

Do call and ask about friends planning on enrolling next term who may participate in one class at the rate of $14 per child.

Do make sure your child stays safe and inside the room. If your child should become disruptive, please take him/her outside of the room until she/he settles down. Then please return to the class.

Do attend class regularly. Consistency is extremely important at this age. Missing several classes greatly diminishes the benefits to you and your child(ren).

Do expect to stay for the full 45 minutes of class. Leaving early not only interrupts the structure and routine that is being established and is so very important for your child(ren) , but it disturbs the other families and the teacher.

Do not come to class if your child appears ill, or has had a fever within the last 24 hours.

Do not talk during class about non-musical issues. Keep in mind that when parents do talk about extraneous events, it disturbs the energy flow and rhythm that is being created. It also disrupts the other families in the class and the teacher. Concentration on enthusiastic musical participation and interaction with your children and the other families in class is how we develop musical community. Please feel free to socialize before or after class.

Do not eat or drink in class. Eating in class is a health hazard and is also distracting to the other children. If your child must snack during class time, please do so outside the room. Of course, breast- feeding moms are the exception.

Do not bring tape recorders or video equipment to class. Please turn off cell phones before class begins.

If your child puts an instrument in his/her mouth do not worry, as this is how children at this age explore. All instruments that have been in a child's mouth are to be washed off by the adult with disinfectant provided by the teacher.

If children bring toy stuffed animals, dolls, etc. to class, please explain to them these items must "take a nap out of sight" during music class so as not to be a distraction to the other children.

For families with caregivers, it is helpful if parents and caregivers each get a chance to come to class.
